Within the mountain of Oiwasan Bishamonten, there is The Sky-Terrace where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain.
You can see the Tokyo Sky Tree, Mt. Fuji, Mt. Tsukuba, and Mt. Daisen. Depending on the season, it is also possible to view a sea of clouds over the Kanto Plain. It is accessible by car, so please feel free to visit.

2. Location of the Sky-Terrace on Mt. Oiwa

Mt. Oiwa is located at the northwestern edge of the Kanto Plain, in the midwestern part of Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture.
Mt. Oiwa is 417 meters above sea level and is located at the southern end of the Nikko mountain range, making it the first mountain in the Kanto Plain to offer a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain.
Sky Terrace is located in Mt. Oiwa Tenku West Park near the summit of Mt. Oiwa, which is 310 meters above sea level and offers a very good view.
You can drive directly to Sky Terrace, but it is also close to the main temple of Oiwasan Bishamonten, and you can reach Sky Terrace by walking 240 steps along the Tenku approach from the main temple.

3. View from the Sky-Terrace of Mt. Oiwa

From the Sky-Terrace of Mt. Oiwa, you can see the Kanto Plain. On a clear day, you can see the southernmost part of Tochigi Prefecture, the southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture, Ibaraki Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Saitama Prefecture, Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture, and other prefectures in the Kanto region, as well as Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures. Here are some of the recommended spots that can be seen in each direction.

To the east, Mount Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture and mountains in southeastern Tochigi Prefecture can be seen beyond the Ashikaga Interchange on the Kita-Kanto Expressway.
The first sunrise of the year is seen rising from the right side of Mt. Tsukuba during the New Year's Day New Year's Sunrise far Worship Ceremony.

To the southeast, the skyscrapers of Shinjuku and Ikebukuro in Tokyo can be seen beyond Ryogeyama and Tenguyama in Ashikaga City, Gunma Prefecture and Saitama Prefecture. You can also see the Tokyo Sky Tree rising even higher from the surrounding buildings. In the back of Tokyo, you can see Mt. Daisen (1252m), a famous landmark in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Especially on a clear night, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire nightscape shining under a sky full of stars.

To the southwest, the Chichibu Mountains rise beyond the plains of Gunma and Saitama prefectures. On the other side of the mountain, Mt. Fuji is crowned with snow, especially during the winter months, transforming it into a white Mt. During sunrise and sunset, the white Mt. Fuji can be seen tinged with red, or "aka-fuji" (red).

Mt. Oiwa is famous for its spectacular night view of the Kanto Plain. In addition, the parking lot and Sky Terrace are lit up during the following hours, so we recommend that you visit during the hours when they are lit up. 5. The First Sunrise and Far Worship Ceremony at Sky Terrace, a famouse place for the first sunrise in Tochigi

Until the construction of the Sky Terrace in Mt. Oiwa Tenku West Park, the New Year's Day Far Worship Ceremony of Oiwasan Bishamonten was held in East Park on the east side of Oiwasan Bishamonten.

The photo was taken on New Year's Day, 2024, at a Far Worship ceremony. The mountain to the left of the first sunrise is Mt. Tsukuba.


6. Opening hours and admission fee for Mt. Oiwa Sky Terrace

The Mt. Oiwa Sky Terrace is open 24 hours a day, free of charge. Lighting usually lasts until 10:00 pm. The terrace may be temporarily closed when it is unsafe to travel on the approach road due to typhoons or heavy snowfall.


7. Precautions for visiting Mt. Oiwa Sky Terrace

(1) Precautions for forest roads
You can drive to the Sky Terrace on Mt. Oiwa. However, please be careful when passing each other as the forest road narrows at some points along the way.
(2) Use of firearms, bonfires, etc. on the terrace is prohibited.
Ashikaga City has an ordinance restricting the use of fire in response to a large forest fire in 2021. The use of stoves, stoves, and other open flames is prohibited at Tenku Terrace.
(3) No smoking on the terrace
Smoking is not permitted inside the terrace, including electronic cigarettes. If you smoke in the parking lot space, please be sure to take your cigarette butts back with you.
(4) Bringing in food and beverages and taking home garbage
There are no vending machines inside the terrace. You may bring food and beverages into the terrace and eat and drink. Please be sure to take your garbage and empty cans with you when you do so.
