Lighting up and night view of Oiwasan Bishamonten

Mt.Oiwa is a famous night view spot in Tochigi Prefecture. The elevation of the summit of Mt.Oiwa is 417m. The terrace of the sky in Oiwasan Tenku West Park and the precincts of Oiwasan Bishamonten Main Hall are located at an elevation of about 300m. There are several places where night views of Ashikaga City neighborhood as well as Tokyo can be seen.
Currently, we illuminate several place in Mt. Oiwa including the stairs, approach, Niomon gate, bell tower, sacred tree, main temple, Fujimi-dai, Sanno Gongen, Onnazaka Park, and Oiwa Tenku West Park until around 10 p.m., although the start time varies depending on the season.
Please visit the grounds and enjoy the different atmosphere from the daytime.

Note: Lights may not be turned on in the event of rain or for reasons related to the safety of the temple grounds.


Light up time of Oiwasan Bishamonten

The lighting time of Oiwasan Bishamonten Temple varies depending on the season. Throughout the year, the temple is lit up when it is getting dark (sunset time). The temple is also illuminated during daily services and on the first three days of the New Year. Please refer to the following

(1) Light up at night during the year
Ending time is 10:00 p.m., but the starting time depends on the season at the time before sunset. The sunset times of Tenku Terrace at Oiwasan Tenku West Park depending on the season are as follows. *Sky Terrace: altitude 309 m, latitude and longitude: 36.369755,139.437473
  • Spring lighting begins, 6:00 p.m.
  • Summer lighting begins, 7:00 p.m.
  • Fall lighting begins, 5:30 p.m.
  • Winter lighting begins, 4:30 p.m.
(2) Light up moning religious service
The daily morning service at the main hall of Oiwasan Bishamonten Temple is held at 4:30 in the morning. Therefore, as for the precincts of the main hall of Oiwasan Bishamonten, lighting up begins around 4:30 a.m. and stays on until the precincts are lightened.
(3) Light up the three days of the New Year
During the three days of the New Year, the temple will be specially illuminated throughout the night, allowing people to visit the temple late at night.

Seasonal recommendations for lighting up Oiwasan Bishamonten

Oiwasan Bishamonten offers the following spectacular seasonal illuminated views.

(1) Lighting up the cherry blossoms at night
There are botan cherry trees near the temple marker and stone gatepost (Otokozaka-guchi) at the entrance of Oiwasan Bishamonten at the foot of the mountain, and several mountain cherry trees near the stone stairs of the main hall and in the mountain.
(2) Light up the fresh greenery
Much of Mt. Oiwa is designated as a Tochigi Prefectural Natural Park, and a wide variety of plants can be found there. In addition, the mountain forest on the west side of the main hall is registered as an important cultural asset by Ashikaga City as a natural monument for its native warm-season vegetation.
(3) Illuminated autumn foliage
There are many maple trees in front of the main hall of Oiwasan Bishamonten, near the bell tower and the Niomon Gate. The red color of the maple trees can be seen vividly when lit up.
(4) Illuminated snowy landscape
Ashikaga City does not have a lot of snow, but there are days each year when you can see snowy scenery at Mt. Oiwa. The snowy scenery of the precincts lit up is spectacular.
