Prayer for victory in Oiwasan Bishamonten

Bishamonten, enshrined at Oiwa Bishamonten, is said to have many blessings, including protection of the nation, fulfillment of one's wishes and good fortune. One of the most profound blessings is the prayer for victory. Throughout history, many Samurai commanders have prayed for victory at Oiwayama Bishamonten. In modern times, baseball teams, private companies, and professional martial artists visit the temple to pray for victory.


Samurai commanders who prayed to Bishamonten for victory

In Japan, Bishamonten has been worshiped by many military commanders who pray for victory in battle. It is said that some of the most famous military commanders, such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Kusunoki Masashige, Takeda Shingen, and Uesugi Kenshin, were devotees of Bishamonten.

It is said that Prince Shotoku prayed to Bishamonten for victory during his battle with the Mononobe clan, and was granted victory due to Bishamonten's blessings.

It is said that many military commanders have also taken refuge at Oiwasan Tamonin Saishoji Temple, which is said to be one of Japan's three Buddhas Bishamonten.


Heian period, Oiwasan Bishamonten and prayers for victory

It is said that during the so-called Tenkei War (939), which was caused by Masakado Taira, a prayer for the suppression of Masakado was held at Oiwasan Bishamonten.
Around the end of the middle of the Heian period, Yahataro Yoshiie (Minamoto no Yoshiie) stayed in Ashikaga for a while when he sent troops to the Tohoku region during Zenkyunen War (the Early Nine Year War) and Gosannen War (the Later Three Year War) (1051-1087).At that time, he is said to have made a prayer to Hachimangu Shrine in Hachiman, Ashikaga City, and to Oiwasan Bishamonten.Afterwards, because of his success in the battle, on his way back he was presented with the Lotus Sutra made of dark blue paper and gold ink and the 15 hands of Okukiri arrows.
When Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa, who followed Minamoto no Yoshiie, conquered Kiyohara Kiyohira, he dedicated a prayer to Oiwasan Bishamonten for good fortune and longevity. As a result, the battle was won, and it is said that on the way back, he and Yoshiie paid a visit to Oiwasan Bishamonten and dedicated their armor.


Kamakura period and Oiwasan Bishamonten's prayer for victory

It is said that Jiro Yoshisuke Ashikaga, the son of Yoshikane Ashikaga, became a devotee of Oiwasan Bishamonten and dedicated the entire volume of the Lotus Sutra and a prayer handwritten by Ichijo-in to pray for good fortune and longevity.
It is said that Takauji Ashikaga also repaired the hall and pagoda, and placed treasures there.

Oiwasan Bishamonten, where military commanders have historically prayed for long life and victory, is still visited by many people today to pray for victory.
For example, many people pray for it, including members of athletic clubs and sports teams such as baseball clubs, as well as professional martial artists.

How to pray for victory

There are two ways to pray for victory at Mt. Oiwa Bishamonten: visiting the temple and goma training.


・Visit to pray for victory

Please visit Oiwasan Bishamonten and come to the front of the main temple. After ringing the bell, please put your palms together and pray silently towards the main image of worship, Bishamonten.

The inside of the main temple and the amulet awarding place are open at 5:30 every morning or on the first day of every month. Also, on the first day of every month, the main image of Bishamonten is unveiled. Please come and visit us.


・Victory amulet

Victory amulet of Oiwasan Bishamonten

The mountain name of Oiwasan Bishamonten is "Oiwasan Tamonin Saishoji Temple", and not only is the principal image of "Bishamonten", the god of victory prayers, but also the mountain name "Sashoji Temple" was given to it by Emperor Shomu.
Please keep the amulet of the temple with the character "最勝(Saisho)" means Most Wining on your body, and pray for your own victory.


・Goma training to pray for victory

At Oiwasan Bishamonten, we carry out Goma training, which involves lighting a fire and praying inside the main temple.
It is held at 5:30 every morning or on the first day of every month.
